Frequently asked questions

  • Foreign exchange trading (FX trading) is the buying of one currency and the selling of another. The FX market is a global marketplace where asset managers, banks, corporates, hedge funds, and other participants trade currencies to manage risk, support international transactions and pursue investment opportunities. Prices are driven by supply and demand, economic events and market sentiment.

  • FX traders use market data and analytics to monitor prices, assess liquidity and identify trading opportunities. Real-time FX market data provides visibility into currency movements, while analytics help evaluate execution strategies, monitor risk and measure performance. Together, they support informed trading decisions and efficient workflows.

  • The main difference between these FX instruments is when currencies are exchanged and how risk is managed. FX spot transactions settle shortly after the trade date, while forwards lock in an exchange rate for a future date. FX swaps combine two linked currency transactions with different settlement dates. Non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) are settled in cash rather than by exchanging currencies. FX options give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to exchange currencies at a future date.

  • FX traders access liquidity through banks, non-bank market makers and electronic trading venues. Multi-dealer FX platforms allow participants to compare prices from multiple liquidity providers, supporting price discovery and execution decisions. Traders may evaluate spreads, available liquidity and execution quality when selecting where and how to trade.
