University of Sydney announced winner of Refinitiv’s Australian University Dealing Challenge
Six leading Australian universities compete in two-day simulated dealing room challenge
Sydney – Refinitiv, one of the world’s largest providers of financial markets data and infrastructure, today announced Sydney University as the winner of its inaugural University Dealing Challenge in Australia.
The Refinitiv Dealing Challenge was held on 12 and 13 March 2020 in Sydney and designed to provide business and finance students from six leading Australian universities with a wealth of insight into financial markets and the skills to equip them with practical techniques associated with trading and managing risk.
“The University Challenge bridges academic and professional environments and strengthens Refinitiv’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration at every level of the financial ecosystem. Students are given the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of financial markets, prepare for professional life with industry-standard tools, and stay ahead of the game,” said Daryl Sisson, Managing Director, Pacific at Refinitiv.
“In the last few weeks we have witnessed huge volatility in markets and how both Australian and global financial markets can be impacted by unprecedented events. We congratulate all the participating students in the challenge and hope that over the course of the challenge we have been able to provide you with invaluable experience into what is likely to be your future area of expertise,” he added.
Over two-days, in a simulated dealing room, the university students experienced a series of accurate and realistic scenarios and were required to rapidly assess the potential impact of these events on the market and adjust their portfolios. Using electronic trading platforms, the students transacted with other banks and communicated with the end-customer.
The challenge was delivered by FX/financial markets veterans Chris Howlett, Managing Director of ACI Australia and Kevin O’Reilly, Managing Director of FXware Ltd Australia, who together have delivered simulated trading systems to educate participants in financial trading internationally. of Sydney, Macquarie University, University of WA, RMIT and the University of Adelaide.
