Identity fraud

One in Fifty - a short documentary from LSEG Risk Intelligence

One in Fifty

About the documentary

One in Fifty, a new documentary from LSEG Risk Intelligence, tells the story of Renata Furst Galvão, whose identity was stolen at the age of six and used to accumulate over $400,000 in fraudulent debt.

Child identity theft is one of the fastest-growing and least understood forms of financial crime. Victims are often targeted before they can even write their name, and in many cases, the perpetrators are people they know. The damage can take decades to undo. It took more than 20 years for Renata to clear her name. Her experience speaks to a broader, under-reported crisis affecting millions of children globally.

The One in Fifty documentary has been officially selected for the Indy Shorts International Film Festival and premiered at the festival in July 2025.

Our whitepaper, It Takes and Industry: Combating the Rise of Child Identity Theft,  describes the scope of child identity theft through data and personal stories, explores the risk to financial institutions and provides a framework for how we can work together as an industry to combat its rise.

"My story is unfortunately not extraordinary. In fact, it's quite ordinary. Children are particularly vulnerable to identity theft and are very attractive victims because of their clean credit history. Fraud may go undetected for years until the victim first applies for bank accounts, credit cards or student loans". - Renata Furst Galvão
