key takeaways
Technology has become a major part of the index: Technology's weight in the FTSE China A50 reached 17.2% following the September 2026 review, up from just 1.3% in 2016.
Financials remain the largest sector, but dominance has eased: Financials still represent the largest industry exposure at 27.6%, down from more than 66% a decade ago.
China's changing market leadership is reshaping the benchmark: Growth in AI infrastructure, semiconductors and electronic materials is helping technology companies gain scale and representation within China's flagship large-cap index.
The FTSE China A50 index’s industry mix has evolved materially since 2008. The Technology industry reached a 17.2% weight at the September 2026 index review, reflecting the growing scale of A-share technology leaders. However, Financials remain the largest industry in the index.
The FTSE China A50 index represents the 50 largest eligible A-shares listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen. Its transparent, free-float market-cap-weighted construction allows the benchmark to evolve as companies gain or lose scale. Following the September 2026 review, the result benchmark reflects a large-cap China benchmark with less concentration in Financials than before: Financials exceeded 66% of the index at the end of 2016, but this weight fell to 27.6% after the September 2026 review. The index’s Technology weighting rose from around 1.3% to 17.2% over the same period.

Evolution of the FTSE China A50 index’s industry exposure (2008 – 2026)
| A long-term change, not a one-off review | 21 September 2026 constituent changes |
| The recent increase in the index’s Technology weight reflects the evolution of China’s large-cap market. As technology companies grow in relative market capitalisation, they enter the index and carry greater weight, while some traditional sectors become less prominent. | ADDED |

A long-term evolution, with a sharp Technology shift since 2024
The index’s Technology exposure has not grown consistently year-on-year. It remained modest in earlier years, falling to 0% in 2023 before recovering to 3% in 2024. Since 2024, it has more than doubled year-on-year. The latest step-up is partly review-driven: Eoptolink Technology and Zhongji Innolight were added to the FTSE China A50 in September 2025, while Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment and Shengyi Technology were added from 21 September 2026.
FTSE China A50 Industry Exposure (2026)
| Why Technology is gaining ground | Greater Technology influence on index performance |
|---|---|
| Investment in AI infrastructure and semiconductor production is supporting demand for optical communications, chipmaking equipment and electronic materials—the businesses gaining representation in the FTSE China A50. | Technology’s larger weighting means this industry’s share -price movements now have a greater influence on the A50’s gains and losses. |
| These investment trends provide the economic backdrop to the shift. The index captures changing market leadership by ranking eligible stocks’ capitalisation through rules-based reviews, rather than through a targeted Technology allocation. | For investors using A50-linked products, this brings greater exposure to technology -sector performance within a broad large-cap benchmark – a material change from the index’s historically Financials-heavy composition. |
