London Stock Exchange Group welcomes Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to celebrate the partnership between Sri Lanka and LSEG

London Stock Exchange Group today welcomed Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to celebrate the partnership between Sri Lanka and LSEG.

Sri Lanka is best known for its strategic geographic location along the Indian Ocean trade route with a strong growing economy in trade of cash crop and industrial exports. The island nation has witnessed high levels of public expenditure on infrastructure and fast industrial expansion supported by recent robust macroeconomic growth, with an average of more than 6% between 2008 – 2014 as the nation journeys through a period of peace and stability. The steady economic performance of Sri Lanka has increased the country’s per capita income and has enabled the country to graduate  to middle – income status. Sri Lanka will also benefit from a new 62 hectare Colombo International Financial City which is a special financial zone expected to become an International Financial Center situated in Colombo built on reclaimed land.

After the Market Open David Schwimmer, CEO, London Stock Exchange Group, thanked the Prime Minister for his personal support and of his government for LSEG’s presence in Sri Lanka and reaffirmed LSEG’s commitment to the strong and successful bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK, and LSEG’s role in supporting this. He also congratulated the Prime Minister on the vibrant economy and the very strong employment numbers which are signifiers of a growing economy and stated the delight of LSEG to host the Invest Sri Lanka forum organized by the Colombo Stock Exchange and Securities Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister then lauded the LSEG’s technology partnership with the Colombo Stock Exchange and global capital markets. He further stated that Sri Lanka is focusing on the internationalization of its economy and is moving forward with the economic reforms to charter through challenging times. He further stated that the Colombo Stock Exchange will foresee positive changes in the future and is looking forward to a strong partnership between LSEG and CSE.

Mr. Ray Abeywardena, the Chairman of the CSE stated his delight on the integral part the LSEG plays on the day to day activities of CSE adding value to their operations through new technology advancements.
