London Stock Exchange welcomes Shares4Schools

Shares4Schools is a competition organised by The Share Centre, a leading retail stockbroker. Established in 2003 this unique competition brings Economics and Business Studies to life as teams of students invest real money in the stock market.

Sixth formers from across the country invested £1,500 of real money into the real stock market from October 2016 to May 2017, with the overall aim to gain the most profit. Almost half of all the teams finished the competition having made a profit.

This year’s winning team is from Castle Rushen High School on the Isle of Man, who made an impressive 21% profit. The school entered a number of teams into this year’s competition, not only claiming the winner’s spot but also the second and fifth places.

Gavin Oldham, Chairman of The Share Centre said:

"Shares4Schools is so compelling because it's real money that's invested. Shares are the best surrogate we have for human enterprise, so this competition enables students to understand what makes businesses tick, and how sentiment - the hopes and fears of investors - can move prices up and down. This is a great way to get familiar with the stock market, and has already introduced thousands of year 12 students to the enjoyment of self-selected investing."
