London Stock Exchange Group welcomes London International Shipping Week 2019 and Nusrat Ghani MP, Department for Transport

London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW19) is seen throughout the world as the ‘must attend’ international maritime event of the year. London is the historic centre of global trade and world shipping and stands at the heart of international commerce. Its long-standing maritime institutions have been servicing the global shipping industry for centuries and that role continues today.

That is why an estimated 20,000 shipowners, shipbrokers, shippers, ports and terminals, lawyers and insurers, politicians, government regulators and a whole cast of maritime professionals are flocking to Britain’s thriving capital to celebrate LISW19. This is the fourth time that this momentous maritime gathering has been staged, having grown exponentially since its launch in 2013.

During this extraordinary week, trade and commerce will be first and foremost in the minds of the thousands who have registered to attend the 200 or so events spread all over London, in some of the most iconic venues in the world, including the London Stock Exchange, 10 Downing St, Banqueting House, Baltic Exchange, City Hall, Trinity House, Houses of Commons, House of Lords, Lloyd’s Building, Grosvenor House Hotel, Guildhall, a range of historic livery hall and many more. Dozens of events are also taking place on board HMS Lyme Bay, LHV Pharos and a Royal Navy vessel brought into London especially for LISW19.

Britain, like its European partners and the rest of the world, continues to struggle to come to terms with the uncertainties surrounding Brexit and what the future may hold, but no-one is in any doubt that the key lies in international trade.

London can be considered the beating heart of international shipping, but it is also the gateway for the wider UK to demonstrate to an international market its strength as a leader in innovation across decarbonisation, automation and digitation. During the week, numerous seminars and conferences will focus on innovation in all three areas.

The Rt Hon. Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport commented;
"We have enviable ports and infrastructure, bespoke legal, brokerage and insurance services from some of the most famous and established firms in the world and we are global leaders in pioneering new technology, green marine initiatives and training"

Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, co-creator of LISW and Director of Shipping Innovation Ltd, the event organiser said;
"
LISW is rightly considered the pinnacle of maritime networking by leaders across all sectors of the international shipping industry. The UK remains the leading global centre for the supply of a broad range of professional and business services to the international maritime community, and it has the largest concentration of financial and legal service firms specialising in the sector. LISW serves to consolidate the UK’s leading position and to build on its success."

LISW was created and is managed by Shipping Innovation – a joint venture between Elaborate Communications and Petrospot – and organised by a dynamic delivery group comprising the Department for Transport, Maritime UK and Shipping Innovation, in association with the Baltic Exchange, British Marine, British Ports Association, Maritime London, Society of Maritime Industries, UK Chamber of Shipping and the UK Major Ports Group.
